<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I painted some little owl ornaments my boys got in their stockings once upon a Christmas Past. I followed the craft wood outlines only vaguely and looked at a photo of a great horned owl for coloring.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hangin' on the tree</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(This is the first time I've had an artificial tree since childhood.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have mixed feelings, but boy, is cleanup easy!)</div>

I'm not big on scary Halloween, but <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/search/label/Costumes?updated-max=2009-11-03T21:16:00-07:00&max-results=20&start=6&by-date=false">I love costumes</a>! Most years we do a family theme (and they're often based on the year's current school theme). We love to look back at all the costumes we've had in the past. This is a great way to display them and decorate at the same time. Inspired by Carrie's Christmas frames <a href="http://thismamamakesstuff.com/2008/10/making-stuff-christmas-frames/">here</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a4q_qKdKx90/VEKlRk4OTZI/AAAAAAADv58/LLSFj_Ma3TY/s1600/2013-12-01%2BHalloween%2BFrames%2B002%2Bedit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a4q_qKdKx90/VEKlRk4OTZI/AAAAAAADv58/LLSFj_Ma3TY/s1600/2013-12-01%2BHalloween%2BFrames%2B002%2Bedit.jpg" height="474" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are made from inexpensive, unfinished craft store frames. I painted the edges of the frames, then Mod Podged them with scrapbook paper. I distressed some of them with stamp pads. There is a frame for every year so we can look back at all the fun Halloween costumes we've had. The year is printed on each photo.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is how I have the frames set up for this year. I'm working on last year's Halloween photo right now.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I like how the white distressing turned out on this frame. The framed photo is a good example of what to do if you didn't get a great family picture where everyone was smiling and holding still at the same time, as I didn't that year. I just collaged individual photos into one.</div>

I wanted to make something to keep some of my girl's toys organized. Instead of reinventing the wheel I went to the always-inspiring Dana of <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/">MADE</a>. She has a great tutorial for her <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-the-hobo-sack.html">Hobo Sacks</a>, with some fun variations. I figured if I was making one for Ivory's new Sleeping Beauty toys I might as well make another for her Small World little people.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J4r6JVA-KOg/UT1ag55v-ZI/AAAAAAAAcPI/LJtguYn-QLE/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B019.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J4r6JVA-KOg/UT1ag55v-ZI/AAAAAAAAcPI/LJtguYn-QLE/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B019.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
This Small World fabric from Alexander Henry is one of my favorites. You've seen it on some <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/11/small-world-bibs.html">bibs</a> I've made, and eventually you'll see it on Ivory's Small World quilt, if I ever remember finish the binding! (She's been sleeping with it for a year without the finishing touches. I just ever remember to finish it and take some pictures!) The striped and polka-dot fabrics are leftovers from the quilt.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDqQNf7qRu0/UT1ahX92n6I/AAAAAAAAcPU/4AvVDthf7B4/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B037.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDqQNf7qRu0/UT1ahX92n6I/AAAAAAAAcPU/4AvVDthf7B4/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B037.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I got the Small World toys from Disneyland. They are adorable! I bought them when I was pregnant with my Girly-o. There are 3 more little characters... somewhere. I need to search her closet! If only we had had this handy sack from the beginning.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ivory likes opening and closing the drawstring ribbons of the sacks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9SEbgW57VyY/UT1agTBEiXI/AAAAAAAAcO8/T6XuZXTmpCg/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B004.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9SEbgW57VyY/UT1agTBEiXI/AAAAAAAAcO8/T6XuZXTmpCg/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B004.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
I love her little tongue sticking out as she concentrates on putting her toys away.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gimv0C8QXtU/UT1aiO8bq0I/AAAAAAAAcPg/JF-0foi0j6c/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B027.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gimv0C8QXtU/UT1aiO8bq0I/AAAAAAAAcPg/JF-0foi0j6c/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B027.JPG" width="480" /></a><br />
Next up (and the reason I started this project in the first place)... a bag for the Sleeping Beauty toys Ivory recently got for her 2nd birthday. I had this small panel of Sleeping Beauty fabric that I got years ago for some unknown future endeavor. It was perfect for this project! I love that it's a still from the actually <i>Sleeping Beauty</i> Disney movie: none of this Let's-put-all-the-princesses-together-and-make-Aurora-pink business. Flora the fairy may disagree, but to me Aurora's dress has to be blue.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQMigLAnCjU/UT1ainoQbqI/AAAAAAAAcPs/08qEjd7A-A8/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B036.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQMigLAnCjU/UT1ainoQbqI/AAAAAAAAcPs/08qEjd7A-A8/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B036.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
I don't remember where I got the green paisley fabric, but the flowery blue fabric is actually from some cloth napkins I bought at Target years ago. (Yes, I do hang on to stuff.)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t8wMzbkyHG4/UT1ajH-x5lI/AAAAAAAAcP4/FINiC7J12hY/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B044.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t8wMzbkyHG4/UT1ajH-x5lI/AAAAAAAAcP4/FINiC7J12hY/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B044.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
Here are the characters toys. I also love that this set came with Aurora in her Briar Rose clothing (Who I was sort of named after, by the way). Now where have Flora and Sampson the Horse gone too? They were missing BEFORE I made the sacks. I'd just like to point out that we haven't misplaced any more since. You may have guessed it, but I got this character set before I had a girl, and possibly even before I was pregnant with one! I had been saving it.<br />
<br />
The square Sleeping Beauty panel prevented me from turning down the drawstring casing any further. It ended up fairly narrow so I could only fit one drawstring through. But check this out: I made the drawstrings from the hem of the cloth napkin. I just twice-folded the raw edge and stitched it down. No turning required! There's even a right angle on the drawstring where the napkin had a corner!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P21g5YHtZ0M/UT1aj_VDCzI/AAAAAAAAcQE/zQhy2mzaWvQ/s1600/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B024.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P21g5YHtZ0M/UT1aj_VDCzI/AAAAAAAAcQE/zQhy2mzaWvQ/s640/2013-03-04%2BIvory%2527s%2BHobo%2BToy%2BSacks%2B024.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
Ivory thinks this bag makes a good hat, too. I love 2-year-olds.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My four-year-old wanted to be Leonardo da Vinci for Halloween and he wanted his little sister to be the Mona Lisa. Here's how his costume turned out. It's based on the sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lph67lqAAX1qj5p93o1_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lph67lqAAX1qj5p93o1_500.jpg" width="406" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sleeved cape is vintage--it belonged to my grandmother.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IkFFIBsetx0/UJit1aUHdrI/AAAAAAAAaMk/sZV-NOcVKM8/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="474" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IkFFIBsetx0/UJit1aUHdrI/AAAAAAAAaMk/sZV-NOcVKM8/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+02.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The hat is a large felt circle with stretched elastic zig-zagged to it. If fit just perfectly, but I would have liked it bigger since it shrank in the wash.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the beard and hair I took a length of fleece long enough to go all the way around the cap (and a little extra, just in case). It's about 8 inches wide (the length of the hair/beard). I left one of the long edges intact and cut strips to about 1 1/2 inches from the edge for the hair portion. For the beard I cut a mouth whole about half and inch from the edge and cut the beard hairs up to about another half inch from the mouth hole. The I sewed the wig to the hat from one ear to the other, leaving the front unattached. It fit snugly to his face, but was a bit stretched out by the end of the night (and covered in candy-yuck!). A few more stitches will fix that when it's needed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tied a paintbrush into the hair over one ear.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here's my handsome Leo. The name tag helped with recognition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Soon to come: Mona Lisa!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a fairly strict no-characters-on-shoes rule. I got these shoes on clearance a few months ago with the intention of covering them with SOMETHING. Paint? Felt flower? My baby girl really liked the Dora on them (though she's never seen the show), but I never let her wear them outside the house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a couple samples from my extensive supply of vinyl to make the flowers and leaves to cover the obnoxious cartoon on these shoes. I used regular hot glue, but I plan to use E-6000 if the flowers start to come off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bpMNxfOxOB0/UOc-82mn7SI/AAAAAAAAaX0/8Evb5azHmMg/s1600/Collages4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bpMNxfOxOB0/UOc-82mn7SI/AAAAAAAAaX0/8Evb5azHmMg/s640/Collages4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I must admit I was nervous at first that she'd be upset about covering Dora, and I was greatly relieved when she was excited about the flower. SCORE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2U95bCXSVxA/UOtKIcpzVzI/AAAAAAAAaYY/rDRk3CtWtVU/s1600/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2U95bCXSVxA/UOtKIcpzVzI/AAAAAAAAaYY/rDRk3CtWtVU/s640/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+003.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a few little parts of the design underneath that show around the edge. I could have been more careful and covered them up, but I'm okay with the way they turned out. And so is my daughter, which is what matters. </div>

I made these Vitruvian Man t-shirts for the kids for Christmas since we studied Leonardo da Vinci in homeschool. He became somewhat of an icon for us.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g8tL3A_PN_c/UOc3YPh8B8I/AAAAAAAAaXg/aXs1eajyZK4/s1600/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="474" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g8tL3A_PN_c/UOc3YPh8B8I/AAAAAAAAaXg/aXs1eajyZK4/s640/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+019.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used freezer paper stencils (tutorial on <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-freezer-paper-stencil-makenna-loves-goldfish.html">MADE</a>) cut out by my SIL & BIL's handy-dandy Silhouette machine (I think I need one of those... Oh, the possibilities!).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H_DrO5bdAaE/UOc2zJoY-HI/AAAAAAAAaXQ/FS2b1pvjJQQ/s1600/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H_DrO5bdAaE/UOc2zJoY-HI/AAAAAAAAaXQ/FS2b1pvjJQQ/s640/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+022.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used the same cut twice - once each for the image and reverse of the image. I like the way both of them turned out. This also helps the kids keep track of their shirts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZZbB-tIXVnk/UOc2xNPhJjI/AAAAAAAAaXA/3Ih_FFSRJNc/s1600/2012-12-06+Christmas+Magic+001b.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZZbB-tIXVnk/UOc2xNPhJjI/AAAAAAAAaXA/3Ih_FFSRJNc/s640/2012-12-06+Christmas+Magic+001b.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made a few sets of these for cousins, too. I tried doing a few with spray paint instead of fabric medium paint, but it turned out so badly I had to start over. I tried fabric spray paint, too, but I was not pleased with the results. I guess I need more practice. For now I'll stick to the traditional method.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J98QY5LnLCQ/UOc2x_mSGYI/AAAAAAAAaXI/hxDW2f9ByAI/s1600/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J98QY5LnLCQ/UOc2x_mSGYI/AAAAAAAAaXI/hxDW2f9ByAI/s640/2012-12-26+Christmas+with+Henages+018.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
If only we had these shirts when we went to the Leonardo Museum a few months ago!</div>

My almost-8-year-old chose to be the Scarlet Pimpernel for Halloween. Sir Percy Blakeney is known for his impeccable fashion taste. I don't think he would have worn rolled-up jeans, but that's okay.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tjdCxeXbD5s/UJiriRCM-WI/AAAAAAAAaLc/KhtUBz_VCZ4/s1600/2012-10-31+Halloween+029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tjdCxeXbD5s/UJiriRCM-WI/AAAAAAAAaLc/KhtUBz_VCZ4/s640/2012-10-31+Halloween+029.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step One: The Coat - My son tried on several women's coats at the thrift store. This is the one he chose because it's supposed to be "really fancy." He didn't like the solid navy wool coat that I chose because it wasn't fancy enough. I relented because I'm trying to let him make more choices (even though I wouldn't have needed to modify the navy one to fit him!). He knew what he wanted and it was perfect. Or soon would be. Once home, I put the coat on him inside-out and pinned along the underarm seam and down the sides of the coat. He helped with the sewing. After sewing I trimmed the seam allowances with pinking shears. I also turned up the sleeve cuffs. Simple and easy. I even sewed and trimmed right over the pockets! The coat is nice and long on him. He seemed upset when I seam-ripped the shoulder pads out, but I didn't feel like giving in on that point.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K7pUcBR3RFc/UJirqqI6ibI/AAAAAAAAaL8/-bxOdFPW8Ic/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+06.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K7pUcBR3RFc/UJirqqI6ibI/AAAAAAAAaL8/-bxOdFPW8Ic/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+06.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next comes the lace: The jabot (jah-boh), cravat (not pictured, but what is just a rectangular strip of white fabric tied around the neck), and the cuffs (which have elastic on them). I never thought I'd ever buy lace for my son's Halloween costume!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s4C-ks9vYM8/UJisdLhkktI/AAAAAAAAaMM/laPI5bG03zE/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+08.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s4C-ks9vYM8/UJisdLhkktI/AAAAAAAAaMM/laPI5bG03zE/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+08.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The jabot is made of strips of gathered lace sewn to a trapezoid of cotton (actually, two), then sewn to a ribbon with a velcro closure. This particular ribbon and velcro originally came around the Christmas pajama pants I got the kids from Target last year. Yes, I saved it. Yes, I used it. I think I deserve a pat on the back for that. I just realized that I forgot to make lace and/or buckles for his shoes. Ah well, Halloween is always rushed. I don't think I would have had time, anyway!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JCqFQ_O-RJI/UJoH03NNZ0I/AAAAAAAAaRg/nA83Yk__bf0/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+09.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JCqFQ_O-RJI/UJoH03NNZ0I/AAAAAAAAaRg/nA83Yk__bf0/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+09.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I didn't know if anyone would recognize "what" his costume was supposed to be, so I asked Alexander if he wanted me to make him a name tag. He said yes, as long as the writing was fancy enough. Apparently my penmanship met his approval. I used some parchment paper scraps I just happened to have around.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8LNi73i_IAE/UJirmxP5l6I/AAAAAAAAaLs/rUW8OHtgwpY/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="474" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8LNi73i_IAE/UJirmxP5l6I/AAAAAAAAaLs/rUW8OHtgwpY/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+04.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The oversized scarlet pimpernel flower was a cheap-o poinsettia from the dollar store. It used to have seven petals but I cut off two to make it star-shaped and hot-glued the empty spaces together as I was gluing the flower to the name tag. Yes, I also have a stash of brooch pin backs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xIia81uYyUI/UJiro0ZZaCI/AAAAAAAAaL0/tUgyP1eoUho/s1600/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+05.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="474" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xIia81uYyUI/UJiro0ZZaCI/AAAAAAAAaL0/tUgyP1eoUho/s640/2012-11-04+Halloween+Costumes+05.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The green vest was from an old white rabbit costume that my sister wore in a ballet recital many years ago. I'm glad it didn't clash with the coat. Black trouser socks and dress shoes finished off the bottom half of the costume. The sword helps balance out the masculinity of the costume. Sink me! If only I had time to find a magnifying glass for a chain around his neck.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c-4e1TrW4vE/UJirko7_5-I/AAAAAAAAaLk/smiIKgZjgxM/s1600/2012-10-31+Halloween+030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c-4e1TrW4vE/UJirko7_5-I/AAAAAAAAaLk/smiIKgZjgxM/s640/2012-10-31+Halloween+030.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They seek him here, they seek him there...</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nlcs5kcH7uI/UJoNVcrf-rI/AAAAAAAAaR0/57nu0oKN_Ic/s1600/2012-10-31+Halloween+078.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nlcs5kcH7uI/UJoNVcrf-rI/AAAAAAAAaR0/57nu0oKN_Ic/s640/2012-10-31+Halloween+078.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had this branch and I had this base (for a flag) so I put the two together to make a spooky Halloween tree. TA DAH!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ER94v5filtg/UOtMHO_T15I/AAAAAAAAaYs/MIy7eZSl9BM/s1600/2012-10-31+Halloween+078b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ER94v5filtg/UOtMHO_T15I/AAAAAAAAaYs/MIy7eZSl9BM/s640/2012-10-31+Halloween+078b.jpg" width="470" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got some cute scrapbook paper with vintage Halloween greetings. The kids helped me laminate, cut out, and glue ribbon to each one to hang on our Halloween tree.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tree got a makeover for Thanksgiving: I added silk autumn leaves. It was a long time before we got our Christmas tree this year, so we left this up in the meantime (bare). It truly looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree--probably worse!</div>

<br />
I was making some test wax seal stamps today for a project and I thought I might write up the instructions to share.<br />
<br />
Here's a wax seal stamp of a leaf that I sculpted when I was 17. I've kept it all these years, but for some reason I had never actually used it until today! I can't remember specifically what tool I used to sculpt it. Probably a toothpick, paperclip, pencil, or something similar. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T4qNwKktYU8/UCBiNkw2zSI/AAAAAAAAZBU/1_5ktczbyfU/s1600/IMG_4807.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T4qNwKktYU8/UCBiNkw2zSI/AAAAAAAAZBU/1_5ktczbyfU/s640/IMG_4807.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now I'll show you how to make one using a small item as a mold:<br />
<br />
<br />
1. Start with Sculpey Clay. You can find it at most craft stores. It's $11.99 at Hobby Lobby.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sculpey.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/clay_set/182-S2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.sculpey.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/clay_set/182-S2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Take a lump of clay and warm it up by kneading it in your hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TuAfy_TN9cA/UCBeoB9rjMI/AAAAAAAAY_s/o9zn7ZsUZeA/s1600/IMG_4819.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TuAfy_TN9cA/UCBeoB9rjMI/AAAAAAAAY_s/o9zn7ZsUZeA/s400/IMG_4819.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Roll the clay into a cylinder. Try to get it as perfectly round as you can, ideally 3/4" in diameter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JfKAzRDYuUY/UCBeoiP7XRI/AAAAAAAAY_4/TOiFLFaOKHw/s1600/IMG_4820.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JfKAzRDYuUY/UCBeoiP7XRI/AAAAAAAAY_4/TOiFLFaOKHw/s400/IMG_4820.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Next pick the item you want to use as your mold. I used these jewelry charms. You could also use interesting buttons, small toys, etc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_7GLbBACPr4/UCBen__wSKI/AAAAAAAAY_g/LZL1T7GNOVY/s1600/IMG_4815.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_7GLbBACPr4/UCBen__wSKI/AAAAAAAAY_g/LZL1T7GNOVY/s400/IMG_4815.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Take your item and place it <i>face down</i> on the clay and press it in. Your wax seal will come out in mirror image.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WT5HRgkWFjM/UCBeqXDaNoI/AAAAAAAAZAQ/dhF4bAcS5NM/s1600/IMG_4822.JPG" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WT5HRgkWFjM/UCBeqXDaNoI/AAAAAAAAZAQ/dhF4bAcS5NM/s1600/IMG_4822.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WT5HRgkWFjM/UCBeqXDaNoI/AAAAAAAAZAQ/dhF4bAcS5NM/s640/IMG_4822.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
6. Use a pin or toothpick to carefully pull out your item and then smooth down any imperfections in the clay.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUG47Y3coXE/UCCbOJPV7iI/AAAAAAAAZDY/uOOMqvavUpI/s1600/IMG_4823.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUG47Y3coXE/UCCbOJPV7iI/AAAAAAAAZDY/uOOMqvavUpI/s640/IMG_4823.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made the owl on the opposite side of treble clef. I also made the owl stamp a little more oval.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gwbvksteskg/UCCbU5U-w3I/AAAAAAAAZDg/sVR6zjn8tCU/s1600/IMG_4826.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gwbvksteskg/UCCbU5U-w3I/AAAAAAAAZDg/sVR6zjn8tCU/s640/IMG_4826.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Next bake your clay (or let it air dry, depending on the kind of clay you use). You should bake Sculpey at 275 degrees F for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch of clay. I baked these for 15 minutes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. When your wax seal stamp is cool get it nice and lubricated with some oil (I used olive oil). Here are some links to wax seal instructions from Nostalgic Impressions: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b id="internal-source-marker_0.7977152459789068" style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Instruction page </span><a href="http://www.nostalgicimpressions.com/Usage_Instructions_for_Traditional_Sealing_Wax_s/135.htm"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">here</span></a><br /><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Instruction video </span><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvsPN5uA89g&feature=plcp">here</a></span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. Let your wax cool a bit longer before stamping than you would with a regular metal wax seal stamp. The first time I stamped it came out mushy, so I tried again letting it cool slightly longer, adding more oil, and also holding the stamp down longer while the wax cooled even further. I'm not not sure which one was the magic ingredient, but it definitely came out better the second time:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x_Hbmauqk4Q/UCCba0fItEI/AAAAAAAAZDo/T9w1M1Tdy40/s1600/IMG_4835.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x_Hbmauqk4Q/UCCba0fItEI/AAAAAAAAZDo/T9w1M1Tdy40/s640/IMG_4835.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the treble clef:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PsBDSk3MgfI/UCCbhDsdqNI/AAAAAAAAZDw/6vrk8kQZuM4/s1600/IMG_4836.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PsBDSk3MgfI/UCCbhDsdqNI/AAAAAAAAZDw/6vrk8kQZuM4/s640/IMG_4836.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fun, isn't it? I'm excited to try out more. I'll be making these with my kids for school this coming year. We'll try both sculpting and mold-style wax seal stamps.Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-42926005108391440682012-04-17T22:30:00.000-06:002012-04-18T00:02:04.395-06:00Scripture Brief Cases - Missionary Style<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
I finally made the boys some scripture/church cases. This is another one of those projects that has been a couple years in the making. I knew I wanted some manly briefcase-style scripture totes, but I didn't find the unfinished cases I wanted until just a couple weeks ago (Hobby Lobby for about $7, if I remember right. AND, by the way, Alexander's already needs a new latch!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDIiCJQd4HQ/T45I43GGP8I/AAAAAAAAWNg/W6as0jhfq_o/s1600/2012-04-17+Scripture+Cases+009+edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDIiCJQd4HQ/T45I43GGP8I/AAAAAAAAWNg/W6as0jhfq_o/s640/2012-04-17+Scripture+Cases+009+edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once I had the right cases I still didn't know what I wanted them to look like. I knew I wanted their names on the outside and the missionary name tag popped into my mind. Then the whole shirt and tie just came together after that. I already knew I wanted some fun patterned paper, although I had considered vinyl for a leather look. My mom and I had fun making the name tags in Photoshop from an image of a real missionary tag. Then we put the kids' names on them in a font that turned out to be surprisingly authentic-looking (after a bit of stretching). FYI, I blurred out the last names for privacy on the www.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KAXUCQgkF34/T447dm-7y-I/AAAAAAAAWMo/FwhOOLGrPEQ/s1600/2012-04-17%2BScripture%2BCases%2B010.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KAXUCQgkF34/T447dm-7y-I/AAAAAAAAWMo/FwhOOLGrPEQ/s640/2012-04-17%2BScripture%2BCases%2B010.JPG" width="640" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The white paper is textured so perfectly. It looks like a woven shirt. I had such a hard time with the Mod Podge, though! You can see I got wrinkles in all three papers, even though they were of various thicknesses. What's up with that?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0Ti9TUdg1fY/T45IqHVgPAI/AAAAAAAAWNY/s5VbJrCf2a8/s1600/2012-04-17+Scripture+Cases+005+edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0Ti9TUdg1fY/T45IqHVgPAI/AAAAAAAAWNY/s5VbJrCf2a8/s640/2012-04-17+Scripture+Cases+005+edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
These scripture cases were the boys' Easter present from me. They found them under their Easter baskets.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tyt-dnHMk9Y/T447dzeWCbI/AAAAAAAAWMw/zk-dfaX5f1M/s1600/2012-04-08%2BEaster%2B008.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tyt-dnHMk9Y/T447dzeWCbI/AAAAAAAAWMw/zk-dfaX5f1M/s640/2012-04-08%2BEaster%2B008.JPG" width="481" /></a><br />
<br />
I wish I could say I have some really cute pictures of my kids in their Sunday best holding their missionary scripture cases. And lovely photos of the interiors, all neat and organized with the perfect-sized 6x9" writing/drawing tablets, writing utensils, and scriptures all tucked inside. All those have really existed at one or two points in the last week and a half, I just don't have the pictures to prove it. I could wait and post this after (and if) the stars align and I get some awesome pictures later. But my blogging has been so sparse lately that I think I'll just post it as-is. So you have these photographic gems to look at:<br />

<br />
P.S. Did you spy <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2012/04/my-other-baby-just-came-out.html">what </a>the Easter Bunny brought me? No, not <i>Pat the Bunny</i> and a wooden castle. Those are Ivory's. </div>

Hello! It's been a long time since I've posted. I had forgotten that I hadn't finished this post that I started ages ago. I actually made an heirloom! Two of them! Well, three of them, if you count each little shoe separately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-eQHJ-7NF0/Tl6UFVbCiFI/AAAAAAAATNo/_g3PQ3CJPA8/s1600/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+2+019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-eQHJ-7NF0/Tl6UFVbCiFI/AAAAAAAATNo/_g3PQ3CJPA8/s640/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+2+019.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Ivory wore a <i>real </i>family heirloom gown for her baby blessing that many of her female relatives* wore for their own blessing or christening. Including Yours Truly. The various parts of the dress were made by my great-grandmothers, and the slip was even made from a pillowcase belonging to my great-great grandmother. That's Ivory's great-great-great grandmother!<br />
<br />
*Ivory's mother, maternal grandmother, great aunt, all her maternal aunts and female cousins, and 3 first-cousins-once removed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IBMXBcHoq50/Tl58F4st9KI/AAAAAAAATNg/PCNkPkRyyHw/s1600/2011-06-25+Blessing+Dress+003edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IBMXBcHoq50/Tl58F4st9KI/AAAAAAAATNg/PCNkPkRyyHw/s640/2011-06-25+Blessing+Dress+003edit.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted her also to wear something special and homemade that she would be able to keep as her own. I used some lace and ribbon my mom had lent me to make a blessing cap and tiny shoes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_y4JsoOHZ64/Tl5u-AU5h6I/AAAAAAAATM0/JGAfnZCqTwk/s1600/Ivory01.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="427" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_y4JsoOHZ64/Tl5u-AU5h6I/AAAAAAAATM0/JGAfnZCqTwk/s400/Ivory01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Photos of Ivory taken by <a href="http://www.tasteandtellblog.com/">Deborah Harroun</a>)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Isn't she the sweetest? I wanted the cap to be a special heirloom. But that thought was so intimidating that I had to put it aside before I got the courage to start sewing! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2qcNhDAWO3w/Tl5u-j0cXXI/AAAAAAAATNM/zX_8_aNZwJE/s1600/2011-06-05%2BIvoryBlessingCapDrawings%2B001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2qcNhDAWO3w/Tl5u-j0cXXI/AAAAAAAATNM/zX_8_aNZwJE/s640/2011-06-05%2BIvoryBlessingCapDrawings%2B001.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Various ideas I doodled before choosing one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kCpHLtjTTq4/Tl5u-x3igRI/AAAAAAAATNU/Zhesd5qpHjo/s1600/2011-06-05%2BIvoryBlessingCapDrawings%2B002.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kCpHLtjTTq4/Tl5u-x3igRI/AAAAAAAATNU/Zhesd5qpHjo/s640/2011-06-05%2BIvoryBlessingCapDrawings%2B002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Here's my final pick. Strips of the embroidered, raw-edge lace sewn together into a long rectangle. With matching, scalloped-edge lace for the ruffled front.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HjKLkIPzk6Q/Tl6T8WiLXgI/AAAAAAAATNk/aWALwg86NdY/s1600/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HjKLkIPzk6Q/Tl6T8WiLXgI/AAAAAAAATNk/aWALwg86NdY/s640/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+016.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I sewed a casing on the back and fed some ribbon through it.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tightened the ribbon and tied it in a bow to form the cap shape.</div>

Ta da!<br />
<br />
Now on to the little shoes...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QApjhXCXH1U/Tl6U7TOZ0KI/AAAAAAAATNw/FtQLm2olijc/s1600/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+2+024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QApjhXCXH1U/Tl6U7TOZ0KI/AAAAAAAATNw/FtQLm2olijc/s640/2011-08-31+Blessing+Cap+and+Shoes+2+024.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I literally made these the morning of Ivory's blessing (church doesn't start until 1pm, thank goodness). I made them in the same general manner of the <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/05/infant-ballet-slippers.html">ribbon ballet slippers</a> I made earlier in the year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qs-sm1BFKWM/Tl5u-WjiX3I/AAAAAAAATNE/6ym4yF3EH44/s1600/Ivory07edit.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="427" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qs-sm1BFKWM/Tl5u-WjiX3I/AAAAAAAATNE/6ym4yF3EH44/s640/Ivory07edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They are teeny-tiny! So I only made her wear them once. Twice. It was worth it, though, especially since she gets to keep them! (And since it didn't take me long to make them.)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Too Slim, the bassist, is the inspiration for the cac-tie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://musicalbox.bloginky.com/files/riders-in-the-sky-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="http://musicalbox.bloginky.com/files/riders-in-the-sky-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
You might think you don't know this cowboy band, but I think you'd recognize some of their music:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/511J5696DXL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/511J5696DXL._SL500_AA300_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Here are the boys waiting for the concert to begin, wearing their Too Slim cac-ties. Yes, that is a snail in Lincoln's hand. Boys will be boys!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V0Mc2sN-MxU/TlZ_o6rKtHI/AAAAAAAATLw/_YHOhO687ec/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V0Mc2sN-MxU/TlZ_o6rKtHI/AAAAAAAATLw/_YHOhO687ec/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+013.jpg" width="481" /></a></div><br />
Here we are after the concert:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rFBLuchndYI/TlZ_2B80MQI/AAAAAAAATL0/4wGqsI8gPi0/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rFBLuchndYI/TlZ_2B80MQI/AAAAAAAATL0/4wGqsI8gPi0/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+018.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The Riders signed the backs of the boys' ties. What a fun keepsake! (BTW, does Alexander's shirt <a href="http://www.dana-made-it.com/2010/02/our-guest-blogger-for-day-is-someone.html">look familiar</a>?)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uc7TWzqjfMg/TlZ_-lUqBzI/AAAAAAAATL4/5-DC-6OASd0/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uc7TWzqjfMg/TlZ_-lUqBzI/AAAAAAAATL4/5-DC-6OASd0/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+022.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
The ties were simple to make and hardly took any time at all. I could have made them more complicated, but why? I used a single layer of felt for most of it and stitched around the edges to keep it in shape. I used a tie we already had for getting the basic tie shape, and just free-handed the cactus "arms."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5wILGKl9EaE/TlZ_hiCYc5I/AAAAAAAATLs/EfbQounvcvI/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5wILGKl9EaE/TlZ_hiCYc5I/AAAAAAAATLs/EfbQounvcvI/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+006.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I did put an extra layer of felt on the backs of the cactus "arms" so they would reach skyward. Don't forget to add a couple blooms!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mXP-4irdPxY/TlZ_Y9MDnJI/AAAAAAAATLo/fDzpMiqhBaE/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mXP-4irdPxY/TlZ_Y9MDnJI/AAAAAAAATLo/fDzpMiqhBaE/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+004.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I had never actually tied a tie before. A YouTube tutorial remedied my inexperience. It wasn't hard at all! Why do we use clip-on ties, anyway? They're so tricky to make, and the clips can be pricey. I love the authenticity of a real tie. I plan to make some <i>real</i> real ties too (i.e. not clip-on and not cactus-shaped).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I4R2ZK_aE8o/TlZ_S4rE03I/AAAAAAAATLk/MsZlhzvH1qk/s1600/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I4R2ZK_aE8o/TlZ_S4rE03I/AAAAAAAATLk/MsZlhzvH1qk/s640/2011-07-25+Cacties%252C+Riders+in+the+Sky+023.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />

This is one that I had leftover. The rose is made from grosgrain (the ribbon, not the "fabulous" <a href="http://grosgrainfabulous.blogspot.com/">blog</a>!) and the leaves from a satin ribbon.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-upxvHeL5icA/TlRjNO8fCcI/AAAAAAAATLM/koywfjN1-9g/s1600/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B017.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-upxvHeL5icA/TlRjNO8fCcI/AAAAAAAATLM/koywfjN1-9g/s640/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B017.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>The embroidered lace was left over from Ivory's blessing cap (Have I blogged that yet??). I took an extra wide ribbon for the back of the cuff and folded it lengthwise over the raw edges of the lace.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABUwhfZm3J8/TlRjNHTzKxI/AAAAAAAATLU/K5h_ug5AmVM/s1600/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B007.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABUwhfZm3J8/TlRjNHTzKxI/AAAAAAAATLU/K5h_ug5AmVM/s640/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B007.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>At first I had metal hooks <i>and</i> loops, but the cuff looked too metally (like my mouth when I had braces a few years back). So I took off the loops and stitched some from thread. The exposed loops give it an old-fashioned corset look, I think. Very romantic.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CLZYgcMzqvg/TlRjNQ7wfsI/AAAAAAAATLc/3iMlRuyGRq0/s1600/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B005.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CLZYgcMzqvg/TlRjNQ7wfsI/AAAAAAAATLc/3iMlRuyGRq0/s640/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B005.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div>As you can see, one of the satin leaves is snagged. That's what I get for not taking pictures before I wore it so many times! I guess now I can call it "shabby chic."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_znhisKl9zQ/TlRjM0ymEII/AAAAAAAATLE/ILe0ZWr0vFU/s1600/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B013.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_znhisKl9zQ/TlRjM0ymEII/AAAAAAAATLE/ILe0ZWr0vFU/s640/2011-07-31%2BFabricRoseBraceletCuff%2B013.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>I have sensitive wrists, so I don't wear bracelets and watches very often. This is one that won't give me a rash because it's made of fabric with no metal parts touching my skin! It's been awhile since I've posted, but not for a lack of "stuff" to blog about. Does anyone else have a hard time doing everything they want to do? My life story. Anyway, here's a dress I made for Ivory a couple of months ago. It's made from two fat quarters. The fabric is called "Spa" by Rosemarie Lavin for Windham Fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u2mXw3Cf1CI/TizJ5Kg37-I/AAAAAAAAS98/6w72XGz1LDA/s1600/2011-06-12+Ivory%2527s+Dress+007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u2mXw3Cf1CI/TizJ5Kg37-I/AAAAAAAAS98/6w72XGz1LDA/s640/2011-06-12+Ivory%2527s+Dress+007.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
I copied a dress from Target. Plagiarizing a finished piece of clothing is more interested to me than following a pattern. It was still a bit chilly when I took these pictures, hence the long sleeves underneath the dress.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WOW8nurLFKw/TizIfSgjScI/AAAAAAAAS9g/s-BHwanliq4/s1600/2011-06-12%2BIvory%2527s%2BDress%2B016.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WOW8nurLFKw/TizIfSgjScI/AAAAAAAAS9g/s-BHwanliq4/s640/2011-06-12%2BIvory%2527s%2BDress%2B016.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
It turned out a little short, so it's more like a pinafore top. I might add another skirt tier, or at least make a <i>matching</i> diaper cover.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYjZtxzbr9M/TizIfsmVY7I/AAAAAAAAS9o/x9Z1mWyD3HY/s1600/2011-06-12%2BIvory%2527s%2BDress%2B003.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYjZtxzbr9M/TizIfsmVY7I/AAAAAAAAS9o/x9Z1mWyD3HY/s640/2011-06-12%2BIvory%2527s%2BDress%2B003.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
Mmmmmm...grass. And yes, the front of her dress is wet. What can ya do?<br />

I have plans to make more of these little dresses. Also perhaps a tutorial...?Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-6847930613649108022011-06-07T17:04:00.000-06:002011-06-07T17:04:19.807-06:00Spiced Up Table<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KVqacI7xdO0/Te6l_cABSSI/AAAAAAAAS5Q/3aoBWNzwvmM/s1600/2011-05-10%2BTable%2BCloth%2B003.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KVqacI7xdO0/Te6l_cABSSI/AAAAAAAAS5Q/3aoBWNzwvmM/s640/2011-05-10%2BTable%2BCloth%2B003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I like to keep a vinyl cover on my wooden kitchen table to protect it from a little something I like to call My Kids. I replace the vinyl every couple of years. This time I decided to make it pretty. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tk8C68Wuz-c/Te6mBT9XgEI/AAAAAAAAS54/E1X7s_Z-kMU/s1600/2011-05-17%2BTable%2Bcloth%2B006.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tk8C68Wuz-c/Te6mBT9XgEI/AAAAAAAAS54/E1X7s_Z-kMU/s640/2011-05-17%2BTable%2Bcloth%2B006.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I use the heaviest gauge vinyl I can find at JoAnn and tape it down under the lip of the table. I know someone who sews an elastic casing into her vinyl tablecloth, but I find that masking tape works great for me, though it does leave a sticky residue. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oocqlJ5p9-k/Te6l_vdq50I/AAAAAAAAS5Y/IwfbSVWYB9U/s1600/2011-05-10%2BTable%2BCloth%2B005.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oocqlJ5p9-k/Te6l_vdq50I/AAAAAAAAS5Y/IwfbSVWYB9U/s640/2011-05-10%2BTable%2BCloth%2B005.jpg" width="640" /></a> <br />
</div><br />
I rounded the corners of the fabric and singed the edges to see if it would help it not to fray, but I'm not sure if it worked. I did leave the selvage edge in tact on one side, as you can see. The fabric is home decorator weight. It lays flat pretty well because of its thickness, though I would have used regular quilting cotton if I had found a pattern I liked more.<br />

Lincoln demonstrates how the table looks all set and ready for (me to still make) dinner.<br />

Next time I think I'll try again to find a pattern that's less busy. I like how it at least coordinates with my dishes, though. It brightens up my kitchen quite a bit.<br />

I added some fun reactions check boxes to the bottom of my posts. This makes it really easy to leave a little feedback without actually writing a comment. Think of it as a Facebook "like" button, but with better options!<br />
<br />
I have a few more things I'll be posting soon. I'm finally starting to get my sewing/crafting area unpacked and set up. I even used my machine last night for the first time since we moved in March! Hurray!Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-12154821731030955452011-05-24T21:16:00.001-06:002011-05-24T21:16:23.281-06:00Infant Ballet SlippersI made these dainty little baby shoes by hand out of ribbons and a bit of elastic. I love the way they look on Ivory. And they weren't difficult to make, either.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzTF2s3fHdM/TdwpuSCAb-I/AAAAAAAASyI/SWkC-wWOeZI/s1600/2011-04-10%2BIvory%2B006.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzTF2s3fHdM/TdwpuSCAb-I/AAAAAAAASyI/SWkC-wWOeZI/s640/2011-04-10%2BIvory%2B006.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
First I cut a wired ribbon the length of the bottom of her foot, rounded the toes, and made the heels slightly narrower (it was already the perfect width: about 1.5"). I used wired ribbon because that's what I had, but it wouldn't have to be wired. In fact, I ended up pulling the wires out in the end so they wouldn't poke my baby's feet. Next I cut a piece of ribbon long enough to go all the way around the outline of the foot. Then I singed the cut edges of the ribbon so they wouldn't unravel. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pihm7hwl-VE/TdwpusrPZVI/AAAAAAAASyQ/hBvcj3pwH7w/s1600/2011-04-10%2BIvory%2B005.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pihm7hwl-VE/TdwpusrPZVI/AAAAAAAASyQ/hBvcj3pwH7w/s640/2011-04-10%2BIvory%2B005.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
I simply sewed the long ribbon around the edge of the foot-shaped ribbon, with right sides together (actually, I don't know if there was a right and wrong side to these particular ribbons, but you catch my drift). I placed the elastic in the casing as I sewed it. Then I tied and cut off the elastic tails to fit her feet. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7g11aB4py8s/TdxwFZe0_hI/AAAAAAAASzU/Yvq65SV6uc4/s1600/2011-05-15%2BBallet%2BShoes%2B001.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7g11aB4py8s/TdxwFZe0_hI/AAAAAAAASzU/Yvq65SV6uc4/s640/2011-05-15%2BBallet%2BShoes%2B001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
After that I stitched the ribbon ties on each side of the shoe (on the inside). I like to be true to the way a real ballerina ties her pointe shoes, but I also like the bow too much to tug in the "piggy tails" instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xBkKc-jYTdU/TdxwFzLtmvI/AAAAAAAASzc/ujr7uOcfKos/s1600/2011-05-15%2BBallet%2BShoes%2B004.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xBkKc-jYTdU/TdxwFzLtmvI/AAAAAAAASzc/ujr7uOcfKos/s640/2011-05-15%2BBallet%2BShoes%2B004.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I love these little ballet slippers. I plan to make another pair in white (or should I say "ivory") for Ivory's blessing day.Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-14076168763393360742011-05-16T16:24:00.000-06:002011-05-16T16:24:08.969-06:00Famous Fabric Designers and... Me!This week has been fun. The Quilter's Market has been in town, along with some of my favorite fabric designers. I don't have the "ins" to go to the big show, but some of the the show came to me! Both Amy Butler and Heather Bailey made appearances at my local quilting store, <a href="http://www.thematerialgirlsquilting.com/">Material Girls</a>, for a meet and greet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vur9JMhaBXI/TcwaN2qDnNI/AAAAAAAASv8/6WhB9dVgyAY/s1600/2011-05-10%2BAmy%2BButler%2B002crop.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vur9JMhaBXI/TcwaN2qDnNI/AAAAAAAASv8/6WhB9dVgyAY/s640/2011-05-10%2BAmy%2BButler%2B002crop.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<a href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/">Amy Butler</a> came on Tuesday. My mom and I went together. Amy Butler was so sweet. She really took time to talk to each of us and to answer our questions thoroughly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iqt-ilrCi-k/TcwaNu4NhKI/AAAAAAAASv0/HagPdNB4W00/s1600/2011-05-10%2BAmy%2BButler%2B001.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iqt-ilrCi-k/TcwaNu4NhKI/AAAAAAAASv0/HagPdNB4W00/s640/2011-05-10%2BAmy%2BButler%2B001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
She signed a fabric quarter for me! I plan to put it above my sewing desk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RxWLTkGqv7E/Tc9kQbkHjBI/AAAAAAAASwU/xVvZec6AfYI/s1600/2011-05-10+Amy+Butler+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RxWLTkGqv7E/Tc9kQbkHjBI/AAAAAAAASwU/xVvZec6AfYI/s640/2011-05-10+Amy+Butler+003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<a href="http://www.heatherbaileystore.com/">Heather Bailey</a> came on Friday. More fun! This time my mom wasn't able to come with me. But I met some really fun girls while we were waiting for our turn to meet Heather. And, of course, I had my sweet Ivory with me. (She's a great conversation starter!) Heather Bailey is absolutely gorgeous. She is also very friendly. She talked to a group of us for a long time and included us all in the conversation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AbKTM_i9wsY/TdGhaOJ3PfI/AAAAAAAASxw/XvoiiKtHy5M/s1600/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+001crop+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AbKTM_i9wsY/TdGhaOJ3PfI/AAAAAAAASxw/XvoiiKtHy5M/s640/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+001crop+%25281%2529.jpg" width="478" /></a></div><br />
Here are some Heather Bailey fabrics along with the fat quarter she signed for me. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sxjkJRXwIdI/Tc9nVvBrLeI/AAAAAAAASw8/Ek93pZPo9NU/s1600/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sxjkJRXwIdI/Tc9nVvBrLeI/AAAAAAAASw8/Ek93pZPo9NU/s640/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+011.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
She wrote "happy sewing" because I told her my plan to hang it over my sewing space for inspiration. I'm thinking of putting both autographs and some other favorite fabric on canvases or in frames in a fun arrangement. Won't that be inspiring?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmTL52Yj-Bc/TdGi7SlN3mI/AAAAAAAASx0/Fr2yv0EX-lU/s1600/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+002crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmTL52Yj-Bc/TdGi7SlN3mI/AAAAAAAASx0/Fr2yv0EX-lU/s640/2011-05-13+Heather+Bailey+002crop.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I also bought a cute little elephant pattern. I would have had her sign it, but I just picked it up at the last minute right before I left.<br />

A new wreath for my new house. Actually, I had the wreath before ($3-$4 at Joann), but I just added the flower garland around it ($5 at a Rod Works warehouse sale). I plan to dress it up for each season. Ahhh, springtime makes me happy.<br />
<br />
If I were a marshmallow peeps fan I could probably work those in around the peep hole. What do you think? It's not really my thing, but it could be a craft blog sensation by next Easter (if it isn't already)!Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-89952609672784006692011-03-24T08:00:00.009-06:002011-03-24T08:00:13.662-06:00Newborn BibsYou know when you spend several minutes getting your baby into clean, fresh, adorable clothes and then—wham!—she spits up all over the front and neck of them and then you have to change her whole outfit all over again? Well, here's a little solution: spit up bibs. Then when she spits up unexpectantly you only have to change her bib!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zoVKQ4zj-30/TYrTQj4-SHI/AAAAAAAASsM/aih5ZI6Y9DM/s1600/IMG_1327crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zoVKQ4zj-30/TYrTQj4-SHI/AAAAAAAASsM/aih5ZI6Y9DM/s640/IMG_1327crop.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I made two: ruffled and flowered. I think I need more in several colors!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9X0NXb_lTnc/TYrWMxhgR7I/AAAAAAAASsk/hGIiIfqFuwQ/s1600/IMG_1310edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9X0NXb_lTnc/TYrWMxhgR7I/AAAAAAAASsk/hGIiIfqFuwQ/s640/IMG_1310edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
She started getting fussy so I had to put her pacifier in for the rest of the pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qrRdY3mUFx4/TYrWQSa-puI/AAAAAAAASss/j1mF29ewhFU/s1600/IMG_1322edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qrRdY3mUFx4/TYrWQSa-puI/AAAAAAAASss/j1mF29ewhFU/s640/IMG_1322edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
You might recognize the fabric from the Stella Pixie Hat Knockoff (<a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-little-sweetheart.html">here</a> and <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-stella-pixie-hat-knockoff.html">here</a>). I needed <i>something</i> to match the cute hat, since all of her clothes are pink.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jCRFog7lZmE/TYrTVN1EGHI/AAAAAAAASsU/o1x8gysnTNk/s1600/IMG_1326crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="594" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jCRFog7lZmE/TYrTVN1EGHI/AAAAAAAASsU/o1x8gysnTNk/s640/IMG_1326crop.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
So here they are, paired together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IdPUXIg-8kM/TYrWOidm-hI/AAAAAAAASso/Cn6zbfKWQAg/s1600/IMG_1316edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IdPUXIg-8kM/TYrWOidm-hI/AAAAAAAASso/Cn6zbfKWQAg/s640/IMG_1316edit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
See what happened when I pulled the "plug" out?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PMir_KqzD80/TYrTkh2PFwI/AAAAAAAASsg/eux6jTbhln4/s1600/IMG_1318.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PMir_KqzD80/TYrTkh2PFwI/AAAAAAAASsg/eux6jTbhln4/s640/IMG_1318.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I made these bibs a few weeks ago but held off blogging them because I never put the fasteners on them. In the meantime I've been using safety pins. You know what? I have no idea when I'll get around to putting snaps or Velcro on them! They are not perfect, but they'll do!<br />
<br />
While we're talking about bibs, I'll throw this in:<br />
<br />
<center><br />
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t6OARkUkkPg/TYgm-Oq7RlI/AAAAAAAASrs/UZfqa1VTflM/s1600/March+2011+016+Porter+Bib+2crop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t6OARkUkkPg/TYgm-Oq7RlI/AAAAAAAASrs/UZfqa1VTflM/s640/March+2011+016+Porter+Bib+2crop.jpg" width="478" /></a><br />
</center><br />
<br />
I just saw this picture of my nephew wearing one of the <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/01/baby-sawyer-bibs.html">bibs I gave him</a>. It's fun to see something I made actually being used. What a cutie he is!Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-86858832662218190952011-03-21T13:30:00.012-06:002011-03-21T13:30:00.065-06:00Breastfeeding Pads -Or- What To Do With Old Flannel BlanketsWith a newborn baby there's one thing that's constantly on my mind: Breastfeeding. And everything that goes along with it. These nursing pads are lined with layers of flannel from old, ugly blankets on the inside and newer cute flannel on the outside. I actually made these a couple years ago when Lincoln was a baby and now I'm using them again with Ivory.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3035/2744471097_193ca66be3_z.jpg?zz=1" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3035/2744471097_193ca66be3_z.jpg?zz=1" width="640" /></a></div><br />
My favorites are the ones with the pink flowers. The pretty/fun fabric puts a smile on my face when I use them. Why not spice up an otherwise ordinary item? It makes life just a little brighter. Another bonus: these breastfeeding pads soak up more milk than the store-bought cloth pads I have.Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-40618715731462818642011-03-18T11:00:00.010-06:002011-03-24T00:09:54.689-06:00Ribbon Flowers 2: Black Eyed SusanI'm continuing with my wire ribbon flower adventures at my mom's house. Yesterday I did indeed finish the black eyed susan I had started before.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://accad.osu.edu/womenandtech/2009/researchpages/images/susan2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://accad.osu.edu/womenandtech/2009/researchpages/images/susan2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://accad.osu.edu/womenandtech/2009/researchpages/Ecosystem.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Source</span></a></div>Aren't these cheery? I love to see black eyed susans growing alongside the road in the summer. And although it's March, I just couldn't resist making this flower when I saw the pattern in the book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0LYry6zzAgE/TYLufDTYOpI/AAAAAAAASmg/NAU6UhUzgH0/s1600/2011-03-17%2B006.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0LYry6zzAgE/TYLufDTYOpI/AAAAAAAASmg/NAU6UhUzgH0/s640/2011-03-17%2B006.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Cute, isn't it? And even cuter on the girl. It still needs to be put on a clip, and then probably on a headband until Ivory's hair is thick enough to keep it in (although her hair is certainly long enough!). I might have to borrow it from her in the meantime. Or maybe we'll just share it always :)<br />

Since <a href="http://www.creativmode.de/tiptronic2040.jpg">Pfaffy</a> is all alone in a dark storage unit for a week or two I hand-sewed the whole flower. This way I got to hold a cute baby on my lap and sit on a couch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kRj7i1N1EWE/TYLufy88xtI/AAAAAAAASmw/Jsy20w2DVJw/s1600/2011-03-17%2B001.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kRj7i1N1EWE/TYLufy88xtI/AAAAAAAASmw/Jsy20w2DVJw/s640/2011-03-17%2B001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
My favorite part was pulling the gathering stitches together. It was so satisfying! I didn't have any clear nail polish or Fray Check, so I singed the raw edges of the ribbon. You can see the burn marks here from the back view of the flower.<br />

The button for the "black eye" came from my mom's stash. And speaking of that...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B7cEk41n8DI/TYLu7GAbiRI/AAAAAAAASnA/DB7PVcPPmB0/s1600/2011-03-17%2B013.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B7cEk41n8DI/TYLu7GAbiRI/AAAAAAAASnA/DB7PVcPPmB0/s640/2011-03-17%2B013.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Here are the ribbons I was telling you about. She likes to organize by color the same way I like to line up my M&Ms by color when I'm eating a handful. Pretty, aren't they?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M4-05sPFCeY/TYLu7gHHHBI/AAAAAAAASnI/UnFyA6HF31U/s1600/2011-03-17%2B014.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M4-05sPFCeY/TYLu7gHHHBI/AAAAAAAASnI/UnFyA6HF31U/s640/2011-03-17%2B014.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
And here are the books I used. The black eyed susan is in <i>A Passion For Ribbonry</i> by Camela Nitschke. <a href="http://phesine.blogspot.com/2011/03/ribbon-roses.html">Alexander's ribbon roses</a> came from <i>The Artful Ribbon</i> by Candace Kling. The second book has lots of pictures of vintage clothing embellished with ribbons alongside instructions for many, many flowers. It's fun to look at, though somewhat old-fashioned. The instructions were clear and quite thorough. The first book has more fresh ribbon flowers (if ribbon flowers can be fresh!). The hat-decorating projects are a bit too dated for a young, hot, hip, 2011 mamma like me (cough, cough), but the flowers themselves are really fun and the instructions were great.<br />
<br />
Next time I'll show you the first wire ribbon flower I started: some sort of geranium. I have to find it, though. It's so little that I'm not sure where it ended up!<br />

Happy crafting!Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-303912925562384773.post-64322706297670001542011-03-17T09:00:00.019-06:002011-03-24T00:09:35.257-06:00Ribbon Roses (Ribbon Flowers 1)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L7HMC88MacY/TYGiXelDGsI/AAAAAAAASlg/Nn5u4VkUcjI/s1600/March%2B2011%2B023%2Bcrop.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L7HMC88MacY/TYGiXelDGsI/AAAAAAAASlg/Nn5u4VkUcjI/s576/March%2B2011%2B023%2Bcrop.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I realize I have nothing green in this post for St. Patrick's Day today. Lately my life has been taken over by the color pink. It's been loads of fun! I have so much baby stuff to blog about, and pictures to go with it. Unfortunately, those pictures are all on my home computer which is temporarily in storage while we move to our new house. Guess what else is in storage? ALL my sewing and craft supplies. All of it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9u7hn1hE63Y/TYG6bT1SR1I/AAAAAAAASmA/yU6caoCwwoA/s1600/March%2B2011%2B009%2Bcrop.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9u7hn1hE63Y/TYG6bT1SR1I/AAAAAAAASmA/yU6caoCwwoA/s576/March%2B2011%2B009%2Bcrop.jpg" /></a></div><br />

Lucky for me I'm at my mom's house while we're between houses. She's been known to have a stash of her own. The last couple days I've been trying out her ribbons and <a href="http://ribbonry.com/">flower ribbon books</a>. My six year old took this picture of me:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-31xs2TV98GU/TYG1hWZcG_I/AAAAAAAASlo/0tKg9uVpyhs/s1600/March%2B2011%2B012.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-31xs2TV98GU/TYG1hWZcG_I/AAAAAAAASlo/0tKg9uVpyhs/s576/March%2B2011%2B012.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
(You can see where my wedding ring goes. It still feels too tight to wear comfortably, even though I'm not pregnant anymore. I'm thinking I need to get it resized... Um... Okay, now back to my story.) My son likes to be a part of whatever I'm doing. He looked through a book and picked out a pink rose to make for Ivory to wear in her hair. So I temporarily abandoned the little flower I was attempting so I could help him. Well I ended up spending quite a bit of time on the rose "he" was making, but it was worth doing it together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-raPSIuYHc3k/TYGWWnY0VtI/AAAAAAAASlQ/8mbTMh-a9mM/s1600/March%2B2011%2B054.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-raPSIuYHc3k/TYGWWnY0VtI/AAAAAAAASlQ/8mbTMh-a9mM/s576/March%2B2011%2B054.JPG" /></a></div><br />
All my clips and brooch pins are packed (Did I mention that already?), so we improvised by safety pinning the flowers to Ivory's shirt. These two roses were made from the same pink-to-red wire ribbon.<br />
<br />

She is one month/four weeks old today! I love this age.<br />

Next time I'll show you the little pink geranium flower I made, and the black eyed susan that I'll hopefully finish today (kids willing). Now I'm going to go kiss my baby. After I pinch her for not wearing green.Brittanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282126713809465382noreply@blogger.com2
